Lake Cumberland is the big one. Wolf Creek Dam near Jamestown holds back the Cumberland River into a lake 101 miles long with 1,255 miles of shoreline and hundreds of coves. State Dock calls it the houseboat capital of the world, and it's the best water in the region for big-boat weekends, striper fishing and dock-and-dine trips. It's farther than Taylorsville, Rough River or Nolin, so most Louisville boaters plan it as an overnight or a long weekend.
Status, late October 2026: the lake is being drawn down toward its winter target, so it is roughly 30 feet below summer pool (see the live reading above). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is replacing all 10 spillway gates at Wolf Creek Dam, and it says peak summer pool may be closer to 720 ft than 723 ft while that work continues. Many marina restaurants and rentals have closed for the season.
How to read the Lake Cumberland level
- The reading above is the pool elevation at Wolf Creek Dam, in feet above sea level (NGVD29), not depth.
- Summer pool, about 723 ft, is the top of the Corps' power pool. The lake is normally held near it from mid-May to mid-June.
- Winter target, about 695 ft, is reached by January. That's a swing of nearly 30 feet, so shallow coves, beaches and some light-boat ramps that work in June can be out of the water in winter.
- Above 723 ft means the Corps is storing floodwater (the flood pool runs up to 760 ft). Expect debris and flooded ramps and parking.
- Release (outflow) is water passing through or over the dam, mostly for hydropower. It swings hour to hour and matters most for trout fishing on the Cumberland River below the dam.
Marinas on Lake Cumberland
The Corps lists ten commercial marinas on the lake. From the dam end (west) to the Somerset end (east):
| Marina | Where | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Marina @ Rowena | Near Albany, about 4 miles upstream from the dam | Slips, rentals, ship store and the Rowena View Cafe. Its site says it reopens for the 2027 season. |
| Grider Hill Marina | Albany (Clinton County) | Fee ramp; listed by KDFWR as year-round with limited hours. |
| Lake Cumberland State Dock | State Park Road, Jamestown | Houseboat rentals, ski and pontoon rentals, slips up to 100 ft and The Wheelhouse restaurant. |
| Safe Harbor Jamestown | KY 92, Jamestown | Lodging, small boat rentals, fuel, a pool and the Lakers Tap & Grill, closed for the season as of late October. |
| Wolf Creek Marina | Island Ramp Road, Nancy | Fishtales restaurant with a tiki-hut dining area. KDFWR lists its ramp as no fee. |
| Lake Cumberland Marina | Russell Springs | Fee ramp for lighter boats. |
| Conley Bottom Marina | Monticello (Wayne County) | Designated Clean Marina, with The Boathouse restaurant upstairs. |
| Beaver Creek Marina | Monticello | Fee ramp, listed as year-round. |
| Lee's Ford Marina Resort | About 4 miles from Somerset | Houseboat, boat and jet ski rentals, lakeside cottages and Sorrento's Bar & Grill. |
| Safe Harbor Burnside | Burnside | Transient slips, rentals (April to October), fuel and a waterside cafe, close to General Burnside Island State Park. |
Rental fleets, fuel hours and slip availability change by season. Confirm with the marina before you drive down.
Boat ramps
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife lists about 60 public access points on Lake Cumberland, and most of them charge no fee. Good bets for trailered boats:
- Lake Cumberland State Resort Park ramp (Jamestown): paved, multiple lanes, courtesy dock, no fee, open 24 hours year-round.
- General Burnside Island State Park ramp and the David H. Godby ramp (Burnside and Pulaski County): paved, no fee.
- Corps recreation areas at Halcomb's Landing (below the dam), Fall Creek, Cumberland Point, Fishing Creek and Waitsboro: paved, with a use fee while the attached campground is open. The Corps keeps these ramps open year-round.
- Lakeview (Pulaski County) is open Memorial Day to Labor Day and depends on the lake level.
Many of the free ramps are rated only for "light trailerable" boats, and the lower the lake gets in fall and winter, the more of them end above the waterline. Check the level above and the KDFWR ramp list before you tow a big boat.
Camping
The Corps runs five campgrounds with water and electric hookups, all booked on Recreation.gov: Kendall below the dam (about 115 sites, the largest), Fishing Creek near Lee's Ford (46 sites, takes the biggest RVs), Cumberland Point (30 sites, known for sunsets), Waitsboro north of Burnside (22 sites) and Fall Creek near Conley Bottom (10 sites). Most run from spring into fall, with exact dates set each year, so check Recreation.gov for this season. Lake Cumberland State Resort Park adds Lure Lodge (63 rooms), Pumpkin Creek Lodge, about 30 cottages and a campground.
Fishing
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife says Lake Cumberland is best known for smallmouth, largemouth, striped bass and walleye. It has its own size rules, stricter than most Kentucky lakes:
- Striped bass: 22 inches or longer, limit 2 per angler.
- Smallmouth bass: 18 inches or longer. Largemouth: 15 inches or longer.
- Walleye: 14 inches or longer, limit 6. Crappie: 10 inches or longer.
- Lake sturgeon are protected and must be released right away.
KDFWR also publishes maps of fish attractors on the lake. The Corps runs a recorded Lake Cumberland fishing report on weekdays at (606) 678-8697. Check the current rules on the KDFWR page before you keep fish.

| The Boathouse | Conley Bottom Marina, Monticello | Reachable by boat At the marina, 360-degree lake views; run separately from the marina |

Hours change with the season and several of these close for winter, so call ahead. See restaurants on the water for the other lakes and the Ohio River.
Where to stay
Options include houseboats from State Dock or Lee's Ford, Lee's Ford's lakeside cottages, lodging at Safe Harbor Jamestown, Lure Lodge and the cottages at the state resort park, and cabins and lake houses on Vrbo. Somerset, Jamestown, Russell Springs and Monticello have hotels and motels.
Getting there from Louisville
The usual route is south on I-65, then east on the Louie B. Nunn Cumberland Parkway, which passes Russell Springs (turn south for Jamestown and State Dock) and ends at Somerset (for Lee's Ford and Burnside). Plan on about 2.5 hours (routing estimate), more with a boat in tow.
Compare with closer lakes
If you only have a day, Taylorsville Lake is under an hour away and Rough River and Nolin are under two. Check all of them on the live lake levels page.
