Barren River Lake sits in the rolling hills of Barren, Allen and Monroe counties, with the dam about 12 miles east of Scottsville and 15 miles southwest of Glasgow. At summer pool it's about 10,000 acres and 33 miles long with roughly 135 miles of shoreline. It's a little smaller and quieter than Lake Cumberland but a similar drive to Rough River and Nolin, and it has a full state resort park on the water, four marinas and good hybrid striper and crappie fishing.

Status, early November 2026: the lake is being drawn down toward its 525 ft winter pool (see the live reading above), and most marina restaurants and rentals have closed for the season. Walnut Creek Marina and Bites on Barren posted on October 18 that they were closed for 2026. Barren River Lake State Resort Park lists its season as March 15 through November 15. The Narrows Marina says it is open year-round, with limited winter services.

How to read the Barren River Lake level

  • The reading above is the pool elevation at the dam, in feet above sea level, not depth.
  • Summer pool is 552 ft (the Corps' top of conservation pool). It's the boating-season target.
  • Winter pool is 525 ft. That 27-foot drawdown shrinks the lake to roughly 4,340 acres, according to outdoors writer Art Lander, and the upper half of the lake gets very shallow, with mudflats along the old river channel. Some ramps and coves that work in summer are out of the water in winter.
  • Above 552 ft means the Corps is storing floodwater (flood pool tops out at 590 ft). Expect debris, flooded ramps and closed parking.
  • Release (outflow) is water leaving through the dam into the Barren River. For river levels below the dam, the Corps also runs an information line at (270) 646-2122, updated daily at 7 a.m. Central.

Marinas on Barren River Lake

There are four marinas. From the dam end toward Glasgow and up the lake:

Marina Where Good to know
Peninsula Marina Off KY 252 and KY 2065, about 2 miles from the dam (Glasgow) 264 slips and jet ports, ethanol-free fuel and a store with snacks, ice and boat supplies. Seasonal hours (mid-April to mid-October). No rentals here; its owner handles rentals at State Dock. Since 2025 it also runs the Peninsula ramp.
Barren River State Dock Inside Barren River Lake State Resort Park, Lucas Rentals (double-decker and ski pontoons, jon boats, kayaks), slips, a store and ethanol-free fuel. The busiest marina for day visitors.
The Narrows Marina KY 1318 off US 31E, about 11 miles southwest of Glasgow Covered and open slips, houseboat slips, jet ski docks, fuel, ship store, a lakeside restaurant and pontoon, fishing boat, kayak and canoe rentals. Open year-round. Walking distance from the Corps' Narrows campground.
Walnut Creek Marina & Campground Walnut Creek Road (KY 1855), Allen County, mid-lake on the west shore Slips, fuel, ship store, boat rentals, full-hookup RV sites and the Bites on Barren restaurant. Seasonal, typically April through October.

Rental fleets, fuel hours and slip openings change by season. Confirm with the marina before you drive down.

Boat ramps

The Corps says there are eight ramps on the lake and one below the dam. It charges a $5 day-use fee to launch (paid at the fee box), or $40 for an annual day-use pass from any Corps office, except at the free ramps:

  • Free: Austin (KY 1342, south of the state park), Browns Ford (KY 98, near the head of the lake in Allen County), Walnut Creek (Allen County), the state park ramps (main ramp and campground ramp) and Tailwater below the dam.
  • Fee: Bailey's Point (off KY 517 via KY 252), Beaver Creek (closest to Glasgow, KY 1342), The Narrows (KY 1318) and Port Oliver (just above the dam, with a 2,400-ft accessible boardwalk, courtesy docks and a weigh-in shelter).
  • Peninsula ramp and parking have been run by Peninsula Marina since January 1, 2025, so federal passes and day-use fees there are the marina's call.

KDFWR rates most of these ramps for "light trailerable" boats; the state park ramp, Port Oliver and The Narrows Marina ramp are rated for any trailerable boat. In winter, check the level above before you tow, since the upper lake gets shallow fast.

Camping and where to stay

  • Corps campgrounds: Bailey's Point and The Narrows on the main lake and Tailwater below the dam, all with water and electric hookups, showers and playgrounds. Bailey's Point has a small camp store, and The Narrows is walking distance from the marina. Beaver Creek is a 12-site primitive campground with a swimming beach. Reserve through the Corps (its recreation page links to booking).
  • Barren River Lake State Resort Park: Louie B. Nunn Lodge (51 rooms), 22 two-bedroom cottages, a 99-site campground, an 18-hole golf course, a public beach (Memorial Day to Labor Day, if the lake isn't flooded or in drought), trails and seasonal horseback rides.
  • Walnut Creek has nightly and seasonal full-hookup RV sites, and there are cabins and lake houses on Vrbo. Glasgow has hotels.

Fishing

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife lists Barren River Lake at 9,674 acres. The Corps says the state stocks hybrid striped bass regularly, and the lake is known for hybrids, largemouth, crappie and catfish. Its own rules (check KDFWR before you keep fish):

  • Crappie (white and black): 10 inches or longer, statewide creel limit.
  • Largemouth and smallmouth bass: 15 inches or longer, limit 6.
  • Catfish: 15 per angler, channel and blue combined, with no more than one over 25 inches.
  • Walleye: an 18- to 26-inch protected slot (release every fish in that range), limit 2, to protect native-strain walleye in the upper Barren River system.

No boat? The Corps has fishing piers at Quarry Road (main lake and a small pond) and on Peter Creek at the end of South Lucas Road, plus the Port Oliver boardwalk. Below the dam, the tailwater holds muskie, catfish and hybrid and striped bass. Tournaments launching from a Corps ramp need a special event permit from the project office at (270) 646-2055.

Swimming and day use

The Corps beaches are at Quarry Road (the largest, near the dam, $2 per person or $5 per carload from Memorial Day to Labor Day) and Beaver Creek. There are no lifeguards at Corps beaches. The state park has its own public beach. Quarry Road also has a one-mile watchable wildlife trail and a 14-acre native prairie.

Restaurants: reachable by boat vs. drive only

Restaurant Where Access
Lakeside restaurant at The Narrows Marina The Narrows Marina, KY 1318 Reachable by boat At the marina; open seasonally, typically April through October
Bites on Barren Walnut Creek Marina, Scottsville Reachable by boat Barbecue at the marina; closed for the 2026 season as of October 18
Driftwood Restaurant Louie B. Nunn Lodge, Barren River Lake State Resort Park Drive only 146-seat lodge dining room with lake views, breakfast, lunch and dinner; at the lodge, not at the dock

Peninsula Marina and State Dock sell snacks, cold drinks and ice but don't run restaurants. Hours change with the season, so call ahead. See restaurants on the water for the other lakes and the Ohio River.

Events on the lake

The nonprofit Friends of Barren River Lake & Park sponsors the lake's 4th of July fireworks, the Poker Run on the Barren and the Trashmaster's Classic Lakeshore Cleanup each year, according to the Corps. Dates change every year, so check the Friends of Barren River Lake site or the Corps office before you plan around them.

Getting there from Louisville

The Corps' directions from Louisville run south on I-65 to KY 101 (Exit 38, Smiths Grove/Scottsville), then KY 1533 and KY 252 to the dam, about 114 miles. For the state park, State Dock and The Narrows, many drivers instead take I-65 to the Cumberland Parkway at Glasgow and head south on US 31E. Plan on about 1 hr 45 min (routing estimate), more with a boat in tow.

Compare with other lakes

For a shorter day, Taylorsville Lake is under an hour away. Nolin and Rough River are a similar drive, and Lake Cumberland is the big-water option about 45 minutes farther. Check all of them on the live lake levels page.

FAQ

How far is Barren River Lake from Louisville?
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers puts its Barren River Lake office at the dam about 114 miles from Louisville by I-65 south. Plan on roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by car (routing estimate), depending on which marina or ramp you head for.
What is normal pool for Barren River Lake?
The Corps' summer pool (top of conservation pool) is 552 ft above sea level and the winter pool is 525 ft, a swing of 27 feet. The lake is drawn down in late fall and winter to make room for spring rain, then refilled for the boating season. Above 552 ft the Corps is storing floodwater; the flood pool tops out at 590 ft.
Are Barren River Lake boat ramps free?
Some are. The Corps charges a $5 day-use fee to launch, or $40 for an annual pass, except at the Austin, Browns Ford, Walnut Creek, Tailwater and state park ramps, which are free. Bailey's Point, Beaver Creek, The Narrows and Port Oliver are fee ramps, and since January 2025 the Peninsula ramp is run by Peninsula Marina, so ask the marina about its fee.
Can you rent a boat on Barren River Lake?
Yes. Barren River State Dock, inside the state resort park, rents pontoons (including double-deckers), jon boats and kayaks, and The Narrows Marina rents pontoons, fishing boats, kayaks and canoes. Walnut Creek Marina also lists boat rentals. Rentals are seasonal, so call ahead.
Which Barren River Lake restaurants can you reach by boat?
The Narrows Marina and Walnut Creek Marina (Bites on Barren) both have lakeside restaurants at the marina, open seasonally, typically April through October. The Driftwood dining room at the state park lodge overlooks the lake but is a drive from the dock. Peninsula Marina and State Dock have stores with snacks, drinks and ice, not restaurants.
